Wellington Fashion

Every day I walk to the office a journey of some 5 minutes, along Ingram Street or George Square, whichever takes my fancy. At the end of Ingram Street in front of the Gallery of Modern Art is a statue of the Duke of Wellington which wears an almost permanent traffic cone on top of it’s head. Anyone who has visited Glasgow has almost definitely had a small chortle at this.

Imagine my surprise (as Count Olaf would say) when I visited the Glasgow City Council website to discover that the main front page picture, i.e. the picture which someone has chosen to represent Glasgow is that of the Duke of Wellington resplendent WITH cone. I’m glad someone has a sense of humour. The cone he is porting in this picture is a rather fetching plain orange number. Occasionally of course he dandies it up with a cone decorated with a reflective stripe as in Gallery of Modern Art, entry on Wikipedia. His most amusing however has to be the Hearts scarf he proudly showed off shortly after the recent Hearts Scottish Cup win. I wish I had a photo of that.

Back at the Grindstone

So I’ve got my laptop back and I actually miss working off the main office computer. It’s got a nice big screen that encourages you to was time browsing the internet and laughing at those chain e-mail jokes that colleagues with apparently little else to do keep sending. Still, the wee laptop has a certain dogged durability that encourages me to keep my head down and get the work done so I should be grateful for that I suppose.
